Back up before reinstalling — checklist

A reinstall fixes many Windows problems — but only if the backup is complete and tested. 'I think OneDrive had everything' is the most common panic after the fact. This checklist is what we walk through with customers before we wipe system partitions in the Lerum workshop.

What you must save

Documents, Pictures, Desktop and Downloads — plus folders you created on C:. Do not forget Videos and Music.

Browser bookmarks, Outlook PST/OST if you use offline mail, and an export from your password manager.

Licence keys for Office, Adobe and specialty apps. Windows is often digital to your Microsoft account — still note it.

How to make a trustworthy copy

Use an external SSD/HDD or another PC on the network. Do not rely only on the same internal disk 'to the side'.

OneDrive/Google Drive: confirm status is up to date, not waiting, and that files you need are actually local.

Open a few random files from the backup before you delete anything. A backup you cannot open is not a backup.

After the reinstall

Install Windows Update, vendor drivers, then security software — then restore files.

Do not blindly copy old Program Files folders back; reinstall apps for a cleaner system.
