When the printer suddenly disappears from your computer, the hardware is rarely broken. Network changes, removed devices in settings or duplicate entries are the usual causes. This guide covers Windows 11 and Mac — and when to book help.
Two-minute basic check
Ensure the printer is on, has paper and shows no errors on the display.
For network printers: computer and printer must be on the same WiFi — not guest network.
Try a test print from the printer menu to rule out a computer-side issue.
Windows 11 — printer not visible
Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners → Add device.
Remove all duplicates of the same printer — one physical device should appear once.
For WiFi printers: print network status, note the IP and add manually if auto-discovery fails.
Mac — printer not found
System Settings → Printers & Scanners → add printer (+).
If missing: download AirPrint or manufacturer driver from HP, Canon, Epson or Brother.
After router change: reconnect the printer to the new network via display or manufacturer app.
