MacBooks with a weak battery keep you tethered to the charger — and Apple shows a warning when battery health drops below 80%. Here is what the numbers mean and when replacement beats a new Mac.
Check battery health
Apple Silicon: System Settings → General → About → System Report → Power → Battery Health.
Intel Mac: hold Option and click battery icon in menu bar, or same system report.
Below 80% max capacity or 'Service recommended' — plan replacement.
Extend battery life
Enable optimised battery charging — Mac stays below 100% when plugged in.
Avoid extreme heat (bed, car in sun) and close unnecessary background apps.
Lower screen brightness and turn off Bluetooth/WiFi when not needed on the go.
When to replace the battery
If the computer otherwise works well, battery replacement is often cheaper than a new Mac.
