How much RAM do you need for gaming?
Av Verkstedsteamet hos Datorhjälp Lerum, datateknikere og it-spesialister · Oppdatert
RAM affects how many programs you can keep open beside the game — and reduces stutter when loading worlds. In 2026, 16 GB is minimum for modern titles; 32 GB is recommended if you stream or run Discord + Chrome with many tabs.
8, 16 and 32 GB
8 GB: only lighter games and older titles — not recommended for new AAA 2026.
16 GB: sweet spot for most gamers without heavy streaming.
32 GB: modded games, streaming, Chrome + Discord + game at once.
Dual channel matters
Two memory modules (2×8 GB or 2×16 GB) give better bandwidth than one module.
Check motherboard QVL list for compatible kits if you build yourself.

Does more RAM help more than a faster GPU?
If you already have 16 GB+ GPU matters more for FPS. With 8 GB RAM upgrade is often cheaper than a new graphics card.
