PC will not start — checklist before the workshop
Av Verkstedsteamet hos Datorhjälp Lerum, datateknikere og it-spesialister · Oppdatert

When a PC will not start, we first separate three states: totally dead (no lights/fans), power but no image, or Windows stuck before login. Most cases can be narrowed in a few minutes without opening the chassis. This guide helps you pick the next safe step — and when to drop off instead of guessing.
Basic check: power and image
Check the wall outlet, PSU switch (desktop) and charger/battery (laptop). Try another outlet and cable if you have one.
Power LED on or fans spinning? Then it is usually display or boot — not 'totally dead'. Try HDMI/DisplayPort on both GPU and motherboard, and another screen if possible.
Laptop: hold the power button 15–20 seconds with the charger unplugged, plug in and try again. Charge light on but machine dead often needs workshop diagnosis.
RAM, disk and external devices
Unplug USB sticks, card readers and external drives — wrong boot order is common after Windows Update.
Desktop: try a single RAM stick in the first slot. Loose modules after a move are a classic.
Clicking hard drive or DISK BOOT FAILURE: power off and prioritise data recovery over more troubleshooting.
When Windows will not come up
Interrupt boot twice in a row so Windows often opens Advanced startup. Startup Repair and System Restore live there.
With recovery USB you can run Startup Repair without formatting. Never format first if you lack a backup.
Blue screen with a code: note it before reboot. We use it in the workshop for faster diagnosis — see also our BSOD guide.

Ofte stilte spørsmål
Can you fix a PC that will not start via remote support?
Only if Windows can reach Safe Mode or the network. Otherwise drop-off in Lerum or a home visit is needed. Book via /en/book.
Will I lose files if the PC will not start?
Not automatically. Many disks are still readable when Windows is broken. Avoid format and factory reset until backup or recovery is done.
