Laptop gets hot / fan always on — what you can do

A hot laptop with constant fan noise is uncomfortable — and can shorten battery and storage life. Often a better surface, less background load and a proper clean are enough. This guide separates normal load from problems that need the workshop, without fluffy tips that do not work.
Quick checks before opening the laptop
Use Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc): CPU/GPU high while idle? End suspects and check startup apps.
Do not run the laptop on a duvet or lap without airflow. A hard surface or cooling pad beats most 'booster' apps.
Windows power plan: choose Balanced. 'Best performance' on battery keeps the fan up unnecessarily.
Software, updates and drivers
Browsers with many tabs, OneDrive sync and indexing can keep the CPU warm — pause sync temporarily and test.
Update chipset and GPU drivers from the vendor (Lenovo/HP/Dell/ASUS), not only Windows Update.
After major Windows updates a process can stick at high load. If it does not settle in a day: troubleshoot before ignoring the heat.
When the workshop is needed
Dust in thin laptop cooling often needs disassembly. Household canned air rarely reaches deep and can damage the fan.
